Margaret Mertens Modrock (nee Mulligan) of Munster passed away on Sunday, July 12, 2009 at home surrounded by her family. She was born in Perth Amboy, N.J. of John and Margaret Mulligan. She graduated from East Chicago Roosevelt and the University of Chicago. She taught English at Roosevelt High School and became Dean of Girls. After marrying Kenneth Mertens, she moved to Munster and began teaching at Hammond Tech and finished her career teaching at Hammond High School. She is survived by her son Kenneth (Cathy) Mertens of Schererville, IN., daughter Carol (James) Crist of New Haven, IN., brother Thomas (late Patricia) Mulligan of Griffith, IN, sister Frances (late James) Keelan of Arlington Heights, IL. Grandchildren; Cheryl (Josef) Schmidt of Raleigh, N.C., Thomas (Trish) Crist of Noblesville, IN and Daniel (Michelle) Crist of Fort Mill, SC; 5 great granddaughters; and many nieces and nephews. A special thank you to her caregivers, especially Linda Baymon-Woods and Betty Sewell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Mertens, second husband, William Modrock, brother, John Mulligan (late Marguerite) and nephew Thomas Mulligan. Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 from 3:00-8:00 PM with a prayer service at 3:30 PM at Kish Funeral Home 10000 Calumet Ave. (next to Fitness Pointe) Munster, IN and Thursday from 9:30-10:00 AM at the church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, July 16, 2009 at 10:00 AM at St. Thomas More Church with Fr. Michael Yadron officiating. Interment: Elmwood Cemetery, Hammond, IN.
