Maria A. Modjeski, 71, formerly of Hammond; Tucson, AZ; Anchorage, AK; Nashville, TN; and Munster passed away Friday, March 20, 2026, surrounded
by family, following a brief illness. She was born April 17, 1954 in Hammond to Dr. Raymond J. and Isabelle (nee Kroczek) Modjeski.
Maria was preceded in death by her parents, sister Diane (late Thomas) Brosseau, and brother Joseph (late Lynn) Modjeski. She is survived by her loving sister, Anita (late John) of Orland
Park, IL; nieces Susan (John) Doherty and Michelle (Yannick) LeTeigner; and nephews Ray (Carol) Brosseau, Joseph (late JoAnne) Brosseau, and Nicholas (Patricia) Modjeski; and
numerous great nieces and nephews.
In Maria’s final weeks, she received wonderful care from her sister Anita, niece Susan, & friend Vicki Skurka, as well as the staffs at Hartsfield Village, Dunes Hospice, and Visiting Angels.
A graduate of the dental hygiene program at Indiana University, Maria was dedicated to her profession and her patients, especially those of Dr. Marian Espino in Munster and Dr. Larry
Cohen in Tucson. She remained close friends with Dr. Cohen and his wife Lynda in the years since her return to Northwest Indiana and after retirement.
An avid horseback rider when she was younger, Maria always loved cats and, upon retirement, she volunteered at the Munster Humane Society, keeping the place clean and even brushing the
cats’ teeth.
Adventurous and well-traveled, Maria’s excursions included a trip to China with the American Dental Hygienists’ Association. She was a leader in the local chapters of the Association in both
Northwest Indiana & Arizona.
Leadership came naturally to Maria, taking after her father, who was a US Army Air Force flight surgeon during World War II and would become president of the medical staff at St. Margaret
Hospital in Hammond upon his return. Dr. Ray passed away when Maria was only three years old but she was always immensely proud of his service to his nation and his patients.
The life of any party, Maria adored her nieces and nephews, having great fun with them – and their children – at family gatherings. Quick to make friends, she could talk to anyone about
anything, a valuable trait for a dental hygienist, being able to connect with patients and convincing them of the importance of dental health.
Maria was a devoted and loving daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. Those who had the good fortune to know her will forever miss her abundant good humor, intelligence, and kindness.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, March 28, 2026 at St. Maria Goretti Church, 500 Northgate Dr., Dyer, IN 46311 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, with a Mass of Christian Burial to
follow at 1:00 PM and offered by Reverend Charles Niblick. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Calumet City, IL.
