In Memoriam: Remembering Mark Alan Neiner
It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Mark Alan Neiner on August 4, 2023. Mark, a lifetime resident of Northwest Indiana, was born on July 12, 1954, in Chicago. His life’s journey took him on a remarkable path of accomplishments and service to the community he loved.
Mark’s academic journey began at Our Lady of Grace School and Highland High School, where he graduated with the Class of ’72. He furthered his education in Construction Technology at Purdue University. Thereafter, he distinguished himself with a Masters in Business Administration from Indiana University.
Mark worked as a Construction Project Manager for 30 years. After a successful and fulfilling career in the construction industry, he and Mary Anne followed their hearts and founded Planting Possibilities, seeing a need to help young adults with autism and similar disabilities transition into a working, fulfilling adulthood.
As a co-founder and the Executive Director of Planting Possibilities, Mark became a fervent advocate for adults with learning disabilities. His tireless efforts created meaningful work opportunities for these individuals, leaving an indelible mark on Lake County. Beyond mere administration, Mark was devoted to the working garden at Campagna Academy in Schererville and teaching job skills to adults with developmental disabilities. Mark’s personal life was equally remarkable. It was during his tenure at the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad that he met his wife, Mary Anne. They exchanged vows on June 4, 1983, embarking on a journey that spanned four decades. Together, they were blessed with two beautiful children, Colleen Elizabeth and Eric Anthony.
Mark leaves behind a legacy of love and family, having touched the lives of many. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Viola Neiner (Schock), parents-in-law Charles and Helen (Schum), and brother-in-law Fred Pullen.
He is survived by his devoted wife Mary Anne, loving son Eric, and cherished daughter Colleen, who is now married to Kyle Sarria. Mark’s sister Karen Neiner (Richard Nosal) and their daughters Danielle and Claire hold fond memories of him in their hearts. In addition, he is remembered by his dear siblings-in-law Bob Pullen (Sally), Dan Pullen (Pam), Rosemary Pullen Frankowski (Ted), Cathy Pullen McAndrews (Patrick), nieces and nephews Matt Pullen and his son Mason Smith, Charles Pullen (Amy) and their children Luke and Charley, Laura McMichael (Derek) and their children Finley and Dylan, Amy Pullen, Rebecca Bennett (Michael) and their son Johnny, Fred Pullen, Lisa Hagan (Andrew) and Steven Frankowski, Nathan Pullen (Brianna), Nick Pullen (Lindsay) and their daughter Lilly, Connor McAndrews (Tewbesta Alemayehu) and Ryan McAndrews.
