Mary Clyne, age 90, of Hammond and Munster, IN, died on November 6, 2015. Born July 6, 1925 in Zanesville, OH, Mary graduated from Lash Senior High School in her hometown and attended Muskingum College in New Concord, OH from 1943-1947. After college, Mary used her degree in education to teach grade school in Zanesville and Cleveland, OH. In 1950, working for American Baptist home missions, she ran a preschool at Brooks House in East Hammond. In 1953, Mary left Indiana for New York City where she attained a Masters Degree in early childhood education and Christian education from Columbia University and Union Theological Seminary. In the spring of 1955, she returned to Hammond to marry Kermit Clyne. Together, they made a home in Hessville and had two children, Kevin Clyne (Schererville, IN) and Carol (Clyne) Offutt (Arlington, VA). In 1971, she returned to the classroom, teaching kindergarten, first grade, and second grade until her retirement in 1989. In her later years, Mary devoted her time to the couple's new home, reading, book clubs, and her church, Westminster Presbyterian. Mary is survived by her son and daughter, Kevin Clyne and Carol (Clyne) Offutt, grandchildren Brett and Elise Offutt, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents Caldwell Orr and Marjorie (Whartenby) Orr, and by her husband, Kermit Clyne, who died in June, eight days short of the couple's 60th wedding anniversary. Mary loved helping charitable and educational organizations help others. Her gift for charity was endless; she often gave away hats, coats, and shoes to her children at Lafayette Elementary School. She worked tirelessly on boards of such organizations as Love, Inc., a charity that provided assistance to Region families. She often served as an officer for Parent Teacher Association (PTA), on local boards of daycare centers and Christian charities, in American Association of University Women (AAUW), and on church committees. She possessed a quiet strength and faith, graciously welcoming people into her life and fiercely supporting her family and friends. All who knew her will miss her. Visitation with the family will be from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 8955 Columbia Avenue, Munster, IN. A memorial service will follow visitation at Westminster Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m., luncheon to follow. Interment at Concordia Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church or the Hammond Educational Foundation.
