Mary Kathryn “Kathy” Sobkowicz, 79 of Cedar Lake, IN passed away peacefully at home on Saturday September 19, 2026. She is survived by the love of her life, Michael Engleton; devoted nieces and nephew, Michael Bruhn, Jill Bruhn, Joyce (Rich) Fabisiak, and Judi Ringle; great nieces and nephew, Audrey Wilson, Kaia Hughes, Elizabeth and Madeline Kruger, Alex and Kylie Fabisiak; many cousins which whom she shared fond memories of birthday and holiday celebrations; dear friend since high school, Barbara Mattingly. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Ann Sobkowicz; siblings Suzanne (late Alex) Kozlowski, Jacqueline Wandel and Nancy Greer.

Kathy was born and raised in East Chicago. She graduated from Bishop Noll High School class of ’65 and St. Mary of the Woods in Terra Haute, IN class of ’69. She received a bachelor and masters degree in education. She taught second grade at McKinley School in East Chicago for 37 years.

She enjoyed traveling, reading, crossword puzzles, country music, lunching with friends and spending time with family. Kathy was a very kind and loving person to all. She was deeply devoted to her religion and displayed her love to the Blessed Mother by praying the rosary every day.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 29, 2026 at 10:00 am at St. Maria Goretti Church, 500 Northgate Drive, Dyer, IN. Fr. Charles Niblick officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to Hospice of the Calumet Area or St. Jude Children’s Hospital in her memory would be appreciated.

Kathy will be deeply and forever in our hearts.
