It is with incredibly heavy hearts that we share the sudden and unexpected passing of Michael A. “Mike” Smith on Sunday, September 27, 2026.
Mike was the beloved son of Gayle McNeal and stepson of Mike McNeal. He was the devoted life partner of Christine Harrison for over 20 years and was deeply loved by his bonus daughters, Amanda Harrison and Sydney Harrison. He was also the best buddy to Rylan and Isaiah, who held a very special place in his heart.
Mike was a cherished brother to Scott Smith and Cheryl Smith-Mansell, brother-in-law to Polly Holder and Bryan Mansell, and a loving uncle to Lucas Smith, Savannah Smith, Emily Smith, David Mansell and Jeffrey Mansell. He is also survived by many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members and friends.
Mike was preceded in death by his father, Donald Smith; his maternal grandparents, Lauraine “Little Grandma” Blowney and Bud Blowney; and his paternal grandparents, Lydia “Big Grandma” Smith and Luke Smith.
Mike dedicated much of his life to serving and protecting others. His career in emergency services began right out of high school as a 911 dispatcher before becoming a firefighter. Over approximately 35 years, he served in numerous communities as an EMT, Fire Captain and 911 dispatcher. Even after retiring as a Fire Captain in February 2024, Mike continued his dedication to helping others through emergency dispatch.
Outside of work, Mike loved the Chicago Bears, Chicago Cubs, and spending time at the beach and Wrigley Field. He also had a special place in his heart for his animals. Mike shared an especially close bond with Dolce, his little buddy whom he affectionately called “Seymour.” Knowing Dolce was by Mike’s side during his final hours has brought his family comfort during an unimaginable time. He also shared a close bond to Oliver whom he affectionately called “Gigantor” and was a proud cat dad to Ruby, Winnie, Billy, and Max. And the pets who came before them—Bosco, Oreo, Savannah, and his cat Lucy—who each held a special place in his heart.
Funeral Services will be held at 6:30 pm on Monday, October 5, 2026 at Kish Funeral Home 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN. Visitation will be on Monday, at the funeral from 4:00 pm until the 6:30 pm service. Interment will be private.
Mike’s sudden passing leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of his family, friends, coworkers, fellow first responders, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He dedicated his life to helping others, loved his family deeply, and created countless memories that will be treasured forever.
Mike was deeply loved, will be greatly missed, and will forever be remembered by the many lives he touched throughout his life and career.
