While still in college, he met Catherine at her sister’s wedding. A spark was lit that finally culminated in a first date one year later at a Perry Como concert at Soldier Field. It rained, they shared a kiss under a tarp and the rest was history. They married in 1954 and set up life in married student housing at U. of I.
In 1956, after graduating with his Bachelor of Architecture degree, they returned to Hammond and started their family. He knew that he wanted a firm of his own and in 1958, Nathan A. Carras & Associates was formed at the corner of Cherry and Madison, a building known throughout the neighborhood for its modern design, red front door and a granite bust sculpted by him in college. Dan Szany became a full partner in 1980, establishing Carras Szany & Associates. The firm relocated to Schererville in1992, where it exists today under the name Carras Szany Kuhn & Associates. He retired in 1999 at age 72.

Everyone who knew him, knew of his love of the water. He was an active boater and loved sailing.
