Peter H. Lekas, 93 of New Port Richey, FL formerly of Munster, IN passed away on Sunday, October 20, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Helen Maniotes-Lekas; daughter, Mary (John) Moorman; son, Nicholas P. Lekas; grandchildren, Anna, Peter and Nicholas Moorman; brothers, William (Irene) Lekas and Anthony Lekas; sister, Irene Opinker; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Gus Lekas; sisters, Mary Sudovich and Lillian Sobat. Peter was a World War II Navy Veteran who served in the Pacific Theater aboard the USS Brule as an electrical engineer, responsible to maintain the “Gyros Compass” for this attack transport ship. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW and Navy Club in New Port Richey, FL. Peter was an entrepreneur with a successful produce market in Gary, IN for 30 years, until he retired to Florida. Peter was a dedicated Christian serving the following Greek Orthodox churches, throughout his life, St. George of East Chicago, IN, St. Demetrios of Hammond, IN and St. George of New Port Richey, FL. Peter was a devoted member of the AHEPA Chapter 123 in Hammond, IN serving as vice president and helped in many activities. Upon retiring to Florida, he continued his service with the AHEPA Chapter 489 in New Port Richey. He was influential in building the AHEPA 489 Apt. Inc., Home for Seniors Citizens and was vice president of the AHEPA 489 Apt. INC for the past 10 years. Peter was greatly loved and will be forever missed by his family and friends. In his full life, he was able to touch and nuture many lives with his kind, humorous, patient demeanor, who never knew a stranger. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at 12:00 PM at St. George Greek Orthodox Church (77th and Lincoln) Schererville, IN with Rev. Constantine Aliferakis officiating. At rest, Ridgelawn Cemetery, Gary, IN. Visitation will be on Friday, October 25, 2013 from 3:00-8:00 PM with a Trisagion Service at 6:00 PM at Kish Funeral Home, 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN.
