Raymond M. Halas, 76 of Munster, IN passed away on Friday, November 5, 2010. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Alice Halas; son, Paul Halas of Munster; daughters, Natalie (Bruce) Gow of Georgia and Kristine (David) Johnson of Texas; granddaughters, Stephanie Davis, Jennifer Davis and Grace Johnson; grandson, Jack Johnson; sister, Evelyn (Nick) Sangalis; sister in laws, Virginia (late Paul) Halas and Barbara (late Edwin) Synos; 8 nieces and nephews, 14 great nieces and great nephews; preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Mary Halas; brother, Paul Halas and sister, Dorothy Morey. Visitation will be on Thursday, November 11, 2010 from 4:00-8:00 PM with a prayer service at 4:30 PM at Kish Funeral Home 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN and Friday from 9:30-10:00 AM at the church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, November 12, 2010 at 10:00 AM at St. Thomas More Church, Munster, IN. Interment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Hammond, IN. Ray worked for 45 years in the East Chicago Public Schools and spent 38 of those years as an administrator and school principal. He was elected to three terms on the North Township Board and served 12 years as a board member. He graduated from East Chicago Roosevelt High School and received his B.S. and M.S. from Indiana University, Bloomington. He was past president, East Chicago Administrator‚Äôs Club; Northwest Indiana United Fund, March of Dimes public school chairman, Heart Fund, East Chicago city chairman, American Federation of Teachers #511 past president; Boy Scouts of America, Eagle Scout, member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Thomas More Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions to St. Thomas More Church or the Carmelite Monastery in his memory would be appreciated. Ray was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Dear Uncle Ray: Thank you for everything you've been to me. An uncle, a teacher and a friend. I look back at my life, and I see your influence in all its aspects. Thank you for what you taught me. Thank you for your encouragement and inspiration when I needed them. Lastly, thank you for the long discussions we had, and I only wish that we'd had more of them before it was time for you to go. But don't worry, we all know that you're not really gone, just gone on ahead, and we will continue to celebrate your life through our memories of you.
