Richard Powley, age 84, of Munster, IN passed away Wednesday, May 31, 2017. He is survived by his devoted wife, Colleen Powley (nee Coughlin); he is also survived by his son, Jim Powley (Cheryl) of Edwardsville, IL; his daughter, Mary Morgison (Eric) of Western Springs, IL; and six loving grandchildren, Robert Powley of Granada Hills, CA, Maria Powley (Shane Healey) of Bethalto, IL, Patrick and Will Morgison of Western Springs, IL, Jill Haskins (Shane) of Fort Wayne, IN, and Tom Powley (Courtney) of LaPorte, IN; three great grandchildren, Caleb, Hannah and Luke Haskins of Fort Wayne, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. J. Wesley and Helen Powley; son, John Powley; and great grandson, Joshua Haskins. Richard was a fun-loving grandfather whose grandchildren all adored him and visited often.
Richard has been retired for 27 years from NIPSCO. He started in the Engineering Dept. with 34 years of service. Richard graduated from Hammond High school in 1951 and attended Valparaiso University. He was in the 17th Armored Engineer Battalion in the Army and played basketball in his division. He played all through Germany. Richard had many interests. He enjoyed cross word puzzles, and was an avid reader. He loved music and golf was his passion. Richard designed the first set of lights at the Munster Little League field, where he was very active. His favorite team was the Chicago White Sox. He also liked college basketball and hockey.
Visitation will be held at Kish Funeral Home 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2017. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
