Robert Arthur Knutson, 92 of Munster, Indiana, passed peacefully on July 6, 2023, surrounded by his wife and family.
Robert (Bob) was born July 13, 1930 to Roland and Linnea Knutson in Hammond, Indiana. Bob graduated from Hammond High School and Indiana University, was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and served in the United States Air Force. Upon returning to Northwest Indiana, Bob worked for Travelers Insurance Company his entire career. He married his high school sweetheart Joan Coughlin on June 20, 1953, in Evanston, IL.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Roland Jr. “Knute” and William.
“Papa Knute’s” legacy includes being remembered as a kind and loving role model with a great sense of humor. He was an avid fan of all things Indiana University and his beloved Chicago Cubs and Da Bears. He loved to travel with Joan, and most often to visit their seven children everywhere from Ireland, California, Florida, to Indianapolis, amongst others. He loved going to Town Club and Briar Ridge with family and friends while enjoying his signature martini with anchovy olives. Bob was always in the stands for his children and grandchildren’s events.
Bob is survived by his wife Joan Marie, the love of his life and his best friend of over 75 years, plus seven children, fifteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren with one on the way. Survived by children, Kathleen (Bob) Ryan of Indianapolis, IN; Beth (Dennis) Wood of Highland, IN; Scott (Carol) of Sarasota, FL; Eric (Kate) of Indianapolis, IN; Colleen (Lisa Rudloff) of Carlsbad, CA; Pat (Karin) of Nashville, TN; Mike (Michelle) of Indianapolis, IN; grandchildren, Melissa (Chris) Orban; Chris (Kelly) Ryan; Scott (Laura) Ryan; Kate (Jake) DuPre; Cara (Peter) Batliner; Kelsey (James) Shutts; Benton (Natalie) Wood; Logan Knutson; Emma Knutson; Eric Wood; Riley Knutson; Emily Knutson; Lindsay Knutson; Erin Knutson; Caoimhe Knutson.
Papa Knute’s last words to Joan were “It’s a lovely life we have had” – Bob Knutson
A celebration of life is being planned in the near future. Any donations may be made to William J. Riley Hospice in Munster, Indiana in the name of Bob Knutson.
