Robert A. Prendergast, 90, of Hammond, IN passed away on Tuesday, September 2, 2014. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Marcella (nee Aubry); loving father of Mary Ellen (James) Schaertl, Jane (Kenneth Honda) Arellano, Teresa (Gregory) Ciupak and Michael (Kathy) Prendergast; cherished grandfather of Gregory, Joseph and Aubry Schaertl, Sara (Brian) Boeckmann, David Arellano, Andrew (Carrie), John and Scott Ciupak, Ryan, Kyle and Matthew Prendergast; proud great grandfather of Aubrey, Jack and Robert Ciupak; fond brother of John “Jack” (Jean) Prendergast; caregiver, Anna Kedyak; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia (Dr. Ken) Nowlan and brother, Ralph (Marge) Prendergast. Visitation will be on Sunday, September 7, 2014 from 2:00-6:00 PM at Kish Funeral Home, 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN and on Monday from 9:30-10:00 AM at the church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, September 8, 2014 at 10:00 AM at St. John Bosco Church, 7113 Columbia Ave. Hammond, IN. Interment will be at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Schererville, IN. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Hoosier Burn Camp in his memory would be appreciated. Robert served with the U.S. Navy aboard the Battleship U.S.S. Washington and was member of the Naval Boxing team during World War II. He was a Battlion Chief with the Hammond Fire Department and retired in 1985. He was a member of Firefighters Local 556. RAP was an avid gardener, enjoyed fishing, watching boxing and singing in a Barbershop Quartet. He looked forward to attending the retired fireman’s breakfast. He never knew a stranger and always had a warm greeting for everyone.
