Robert E. Matthews, age 65, of Griffith, IN, passed away on Friday, October 14, 2016. He is survived by his wife, Maureen Matthews; children, Melissa (Matthews) Szymanski; Bret (Elena) Matthews; step-children, Michael Lis, Daniel (Aly) Lis, Mary Beth (Jason) Kaplan; 14 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; siblings, William ‚ÄúBill‚Äù (Lynette) Matthews, Bud (Rebecca) Matthews, Jane (Steve) Frahm; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Shirleyann Matthews; and son, Bryan Matthews. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 20, 2016 DIRECTLY at Trinity Lutheran Church 7227 Hohman Ave. Hammond, IN. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery Hammond, IN. Visitation will be on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at Kish Funeral Home 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and at the church, on Thursday, from 10:30 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. service, with Pastor Frank Showers officiating. A Prayer Service will be held at 4:00 p.m. and a Masonic Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Robert retired from Ironworkers Local 395, after 45years of service. He was a member of the McKinley Masonic Lodge 712 of Schererville, IN. Robert was a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Robert‚Äôs name to C.O.P.S, Concerns of Police Survivors.

Your recognition will never be forgotten. Thank you for the inspiration you have given. My sincere condolences.

We will miss you. You are part of many happy memories that we have which span 50 + years.

You were a good and loyal friend all through school and afterwards as we got married, had children, and grew older. You were Johnny-on-the-spot for me when my father died in 1967. I will remember the good times, and I will miss you. Our condolences to all the family members from Terry & Becky Morse.

One of my best friends for over fifty years. We didn't always need to be in touch, but we knew we were always connected. I will miss you!!!!

Bob was such a gentle and kind man. The Leahys were so lucky have him as a part of our family during the years that he and Maureen were together. I am so sorry we can't attend the services but you are in our thoughts.
