July 14, 1943 – July 26, 2025
It is with heartfelt sorrow and deep respect that we share the news of the passing of a remarkable individual, whose presence touched the lives of many and whose legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. As we gather our thoughts and memories, we reflect on a life well-lived –one adorned with moments of laughter, compassion, and unwavering strength. Ronald Riley Sr, 82, passed away at Community Hospital, Munster, IN.
Ron Sr. was the son of Mr. John H. and Mrs. Claudia M. Riley. He was born in a close-knit community in Nashville, Tennessee. Raised among loved ones who cherished the joys of togetherness, he developed a lasting sense of curiosity about the world and an enduring appreciation for knowledge. Teachers, mentors, and friends recognized a unique spark, an eagerness, not just for life, but an eagerness in life itself. He forged friendships that would last for a lifetime. His pursuit of life and perseverance earned him a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from Tennessee State University. It was here that he first discovered his passion for helping others, a trait that would become a hallmark throughout his life. Whether in study sessions with classmates, volunteering at local organizations, or simply listening when someone needed a friend, his compassion left an indelible mark on those around him.
Armed with determination and a desire to make a difference, Ron embarked on his civil engineering career with Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Bethlehem, PA. He remained with Bethlehem Steel Corporation, in various capacities and locations, for over 40 years. His leadership was quiet and steadfast, characterized by a belief in the potential of others and a commitment to lifting those around him. During his career, he reached multiple milestones reflecting his professional efforts and activities. One of his most notable steel construction projects is the mile-long $20 million Interstate 40 bridge across the Mississippi River at Memphis, TN.
Away from the demands of his work life, Ron Sr. found joy in a wide array of interests and pursuits. He regularly participated in roller skating throughout his life. He was an avid reader – whether it was in the pages of one of his of favorite novels, a biography, a newspaper, a magazine, or even a how-to manual – he read with full attention. He enjoyed listening to music and making playlists. He was a sports fanatic – from team sports to NASCAR events, he was all in! Travel also played a significant role in his life. It offered opportunities to experience new perspectives and forge connections with people from all walks of life. His adventures were not merely about seeing the world, but about understanding it — embracing the beauty and diversity that make each place unique. He especially enjoyed exploring both coasts of the United States, cruising to Alaska and the Bahamas, driving through the Canadian provinces, participating in motorcycle roundups across the U.S. and visiting famous landmarks such as the Grand Canyon, the Egyptian Pyramids, the First Qin Emperor’s tomb with its Terra-cotta Army, and the Great Wall of China.
As we reflect on his life, one theme emerges above all – his kindness. In both words and deeds, he exemplified the belief that even the smallest gesture can have a lasting impact. His legacy is etched not only in his achievements, but in the colleagues empowered to reach new heights, and the friends and family uplifted in times of need. His story is a reminder that true greatness lies not in accolades or titles, but in the quiet moments of connection, the daily acts of generosity, and the courage to embrace each new day with hope. Though his physical presence is no longer with us, the spirit and memory of Ron Sr. remain ever-present in th e hearts of all who knew and loved him. We celebrate a life that was rich in meaning and purpose, and we find comfort in the knowledge that his influence will endure for generations. As we say our final goodbyes, let us honor his memory by carrying forward the values he exemplified: compassion, humility, and an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place for all.
