Samuel “Sonny” Schatz, 83, passed away on August 22, 2026, surrounded by his family. Sonny was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose warmth, generosity and love touched countless lives.
Sonny was married to his beloved wife, Bobbye, for 60 years. Together they raised three daughters: Randi (Lou) Stricker, Staci (Bob) Kaufmann Muller and Jamie (Jeremy) Friedberg.
Sonny was a proud grandfather to Brett (Molly) Kaufmann, Kyle Kaufmann, Eli Stricker, Emma Stricker, Rory Friedberg and Carter Friedberg. His family was his greatest source of pride and joy, and the love he shared with them will continue to live on through the memories they created together.
Sonny was the proud owner of Broadway Auto Parts in Gary, Indiana, where for more than 60 years he built a successful business.
His commitment to his community extended beyond his business and family. Sonny was a past president of Congregation Beth Israel, where he gave his time and leadership to the synagogue and Jewish community he cared deeply about.
An Indiana University graduate, Sonny was a huge IU fan and faithfully followed the Chicago Bears and his beloved White Sox. Whether cheering on his favorite teams or talking sports with family and friends, these passions brought him great joy throughout his life.
Sonny was the heart of his family and brought love, laughter, and warmth to everyone around him. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished by his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Funeral Services will be held on August 24, 2026 at Congregation Beth Israel 535 Progress Avenue Munster, Indiana 46321. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. and a graveside service immediately afterward at Kneseth Israel Hammond, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sonny’s memory to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.
