SANDRA “SANDY” L. LASZLO, age 79 years of Highland, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, January 14, 2023.
Sandy was born January 26, 1943, in Hammond, IN. She was the daughter of Edward and Emily (nee Zabinski) Szura. Sandy grew up in Lansing, IL but also lived in Calumet City, IL and Highland, IN during her lifetime.
She will be deeply missed and is survived by her two children: Shawn (Mary) Laszlo of Bedford, IN and Darrin (Andraya) Laszlo of Broomfield, CO. Also surviving are her two grandchildren, Andy Laszlo of Indianapolis, IN and Emily Laszlo of Bloomington, IN; sister, Diane (Norm) Podkul of Lansing, IL; and many family members and friends whom she loved. She was preceded in death by both parents and brother, Tony.
As a young homemaker, Sandy had her own at-home hair salon and cashiered part-time at Sterk’s Super Foods. After she became a single mom, Sandy spent 30 years making the grueling drive to South Chicago working as an administrative assistant in the steel fabricating industry, while still maintaining evening jobs. She was also active with and held leadership roles in a variety of charitable organizations including the Hammond Mayflower Home for Girls and Hammond Jayshees. To her boys, Sandy was a stellar example of hard work, frugality, independence and toughness…with a caring heart.
Our Ma was an artistic lady who loved many types of crafting, camping, spending time with family and an occasional Amaretto & Southern Comfort. She could also make a mean pot of chicken soup.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of life on May 20th from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Kish Funeral Home, 10000 Calumet Avenue, Munster, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. James Church – Food Pantry in Highland.
