Sharon S. Smith, age 74, of Hammond, IN passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2016. She is survived by her husband, of 51 years, Douglas Smith; daughters, Michelle Berumen, Lori Ann (Mark) Thursby and Victoria (Thomas) Solon; grandchildren, Nicole Dongu, Ryan (fiancé Rachel) Berumen, Daniel (fiancé Kelly) Berumen, Hannah Solon and Paige Solon; great grandchildren, Makayla, Madison and Savannah; brothers, Pete (Pat) Lawhead, Butch (Pam) Lawhead, Dick (Ann) Dennis; sisters, Cheryl Lawhead, Mary Ellen (William) Garrett and Christi Lawhead; special aunt, Clara Waldrop; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence Lawhead, Pauline Chepregi; and brother, James Dennis. Visitation will be on Wednesday, September 7, 2016 from 4:00-8:00 pm at Kish Funeral Home, 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN and on Thursday from 9:00-10:00 am. Funeral service will be on Thursday, September 8, 2016 at 10:00 am at the funeral home. Interment will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Hammond, IN. Sharon’s second family was the School City of Hammond. She began her career in 1971 at Wilson Elementary School working in the attendance office. She retired in 2012 after working in the Central Files Office. She was dedicated to serving the needs of the Hammond students and their families. Sharon was also known as the “Avon Lady.” She devoted over 40 years in helping her customers look and feel their best. Sharon will most be remembered for her generous heart. There wasn’t a person, animal or cause that she didn’t support. She overcame many obstacles to make a better life for her family. There was nothing more important to her than those she loved. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
