Stella A. (nee Kozyra) Szewczyk, a lifelong resident of Hegewisch, IL, passed away, at age 95, peacefully into the hands of God on December 26th, after celebrating Christmas with her family. She was the daughter of the late, Mary and Jacob Kozyra, who immigrated from Poland. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward “Doc” Szewczyk; and beloved daughter, Margaret (Robert) Erwin; sisters, Jeanne (Henry) Cassidy, Sandy (Frank) Smolinski, Bernice (Pete) Czyon, and Josephine (Rudy) Premetz; and brother, Stanley Kozyra. She is survived by her son, Edward (Roseann) Szewczyk; sister-in-law, Lulu Kozyra; grandchildren, Robert (Terrie) Erwin, Jamie (Rob) Furmanek, Merriebeth (Chris) Saenz, Steve Szewczyk, Kristen (Alex) Szewczyk, and Michael (fiancé Jessica) Szewczyk; and nine great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 31, 2016 DIRECTLY at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church 500 Northgate Dr. Dyer, IN, with Reverend Charles Niblick, officiating. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery Calumet City, IL. Visitation will on Saturday, at the church, from 8:30 a.m. until the 10:30 a.m. Mass. Stella was a dear friend to many. She was a member of the Polish Museum of America, the P.R.C.U. and the former St. Elizabeth Lodge. Stella loved her family, her garden and her coffee. She lived through the depression and could endlessly about her working as a teenager at the Sunshine Laundry and as an adult at Press Steel. Stella will be missed by all.
