Steven Crawford Beatty, known in Taiwan by his Chinese name Bei Hualong, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on July 19, 2026 in a hospital in Taichung, Taiwan.

Steven is survived by his father, Brian Beatty; brothers, Scott Lindsey and Philip Chiang; his sister, Shelby Hsiao; and his grandfather, William Beatty. He was preceded in death by his mother, Szyaw “Julie” Lindsey; grandparents, Chufu Hsu, Linteh Chung and Marcia Schaw Beatty.

Born in Munster, Indiana, Steven was a proud 2008 graduate of Munster High School. He later attended Purdue University, where he earned degrees in Psychology and English. Motivated by a deep appreciation for language, culture, and his Taiwanese roots, he continued his studies at the National Taiwan Normal University, earning a Master of Arts in Applied Chinese Language and Culture. He achieved college-level proficiency in Mandarin Chinese and was granted a standing ovation by his classmates at the conclusion of his Master’s thesis presentation.

Throughout his life, Steven dedicated himself to education, mentorship, cultural exchange, and international engagement. He was proud of the work he performed with organizations including Feng Chia University, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago, Hong Wen High School and China Medical University.

Whether working with students, colleagues, or friends, he had a unique ability to connect with people from all walks of life. His kindness, curiosity and genuine interest in others left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Outside of work, Steven lived life with enthusiasm and authenticity. He loved traveling, exploring new places, learning about different cultures, creating content online, listening to music, reading, playing mahjong with friends and sharing experiences with those around him. He found joy in both grand adventures and simple moments, whether wandering the streets of Taiwan, visiting family, or spending time with friends over conversation and laughter.

A Memorial Service followed by cremation was held in Taichung, Taiwan on July 27, 2026.

Friends and family are invited to attend a Celebration of Life on Sunday, August 9, 2026 from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Kish Funeral Home 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster IN 46321. Please consider wearing a Hawaiian shirt as that was the way Steven dressed most days of his adult life.
