Syma Toba “Tiby” Greenberger, 96, of Munster, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, February 22, 2026. The oldest of four children, she was born on July 30, 1929 to Ceil and Sol Goode. She was raised in Steubenville, Ohio and graduated from THE Ohio State University before marrying Julius (Jay) Greenberger and moving to Chicago. Tiby began her career as a social worker, and later taught school in Dolton, Illinois, where she was a dedicated teacher to her students over many years.
Tiby was a longtime member of Temple Beth-El, teaching Sunday school and supporting her congregation in a variety of roles. A member and worker for several charitable organizations in the Chicagoland area, she volunteered for many years as a docent for The Art Institute of Chicago, bringing art to seniors in their communities. Tiby was an avid reader, a world traveler, and greatly enjoyed the theater, ballet and the Chicago Symphony.
A fabulous conversationalist, she made friends everywhere she went. Family meant everything to her.
Tiby is survived by her two sons, Steven (Mary) and Hal (Shoshana); her three grandchildren, Julia (Macon), Joshua, and Daniele, who were the loves of her life; and many other nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Don and Mark; her sister, Naomi,; and her daughter-in-law, Suzanne.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Temple Beit Shalom 10001 Columbia Ave. Munster, IN with Rabbi Gidon Isaacs officiating. Interment will follow at Westlake Cemetery Norridge, IL.
