Valentine Ann Rudakas, 97, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2026. She was born on June 27, 1928, in East Chicago, Indiana, to Joseph and Aniela (Anne) Szpilka.
Valentine lived a long and meaningful life centered around her family and the simple joys she cherished most. She was an avid reader who found great happiness in books, and she loved to travel, always eager to experience new places and create lasting memories. An exceptional cook, she expressed her care for others through her meals, welcoming all with warmth and hospitality into her home.
Nothing meant more to Valentine than her family. She took great pride and hoy in attending her children’s, grandchildren’s, and great-grandchildren’s sporting events, recitals, and plats. Her presence was a constant source of love and encouragement, and her support never wavered.
She graduated from Catholic Central (Bishop Noll) High School in 1946 and went on to attend the College of St, Francis in Joliet, Illinois. Before her marriage in 1953, Valentine worked at Sinclair and later dedicated 30 years to the original Burger’s Grocery and its successor, Key Market.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward; her parents, Joseph and Aniela Szpilka; her sister, Jeanette Pitrowski; and four infant brothers.
She is survived by her children, Thomas (Tara) Rudakas, Gail Rudakas, John Rudakas, Robert (Traci) Rudakas, and Karen (Michael) Grein; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Valentine will be remembered for her kindness, her devotion to family, and the strength of faith that defined her life; she was an active member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Munster, IN for more that 60 years. She leaves behind a legacy of love that will continue through the generations she cherished so deeply.
Her interment is in accordance with her wishes and further moments to honor her memory will be shared as they are decided.
