Zvonimir T. Jugovic passed away on April 22, 2012 at the William J. Riley Hospice residence in Munster, Indiana. He recently celebrated his 90th birthday with family and friends. Zvonimir is survived by his wife, Maria, of 58 years; daughter Dr. Mary Ann (Robert C. Jr.) Collins; son John Philip (Cheryl) Jugovic; grandchildren Robert C. Collins III and Dr. Marissa (Zachary) Schiel; great granddaughter Aria Maria Schiel; and many relatives and friends in this country and in his native land of Croatia. He is preceded in death by his beloved son Daniel Joseph whose early death brought Zvonimir closer to God, attending daily Mass for more than 20 years and developing a fervent devotion to prayer and the Holy Rosary.Zvonimir was born and raised in Croatia, where he studied chemistry and economics at the University of Zagreb from 1940 to 1945. He first came to the United Stated in 1947 and began his career as a Research Chemist, progressing to Section Leader, Senior Research Scientist and Research Associate in cement chemistry with the Universal Atlas Cement Division of U.S. Steel Corporation (1947-1980) and Lehigh Portland Cement Company (1980-81). Zvonimir became known for his work on the role of calcium sulfate in cement and was the recipient of the 1970 ASTM Sanford E. Thompson Award for a paper of outstanding merit on concrete. He was also a co-recipient of a patent for “Expansive Cement and its Method of Manufacture.” Professionally, Zvonimir was a lifelong member of American Chemical Society, the American Concrete Institute, the American Ceramic Society, and the American Society for Testing and Material for which he served as a sub-committee chairman.Additionally Zvonimir was member of the Croatian Fraternal Union and the Croatian Academy of America. Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 from 3:00-8:00 PM with a prayer service at 3:30 PM and the Rosary will be prayed at 4:00 PM at Kish Funeral Home, 10000 Calumet Ave. Munster, IN and on Wednesday from 9:30-10:00 AM at the church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at 10:00 AM at St. Thomas More Church. Interment will be at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville, IN.In lieu of flowers, memorials would be appreciated to the Hospice of the Calumet Area, Munster, IN, Holy Cross Catholic Church, Orr, MN or the Catholic Church in Gospic, Croatia. Zvonimir was devoted to his God and his family and will forever live on in our hearts. We celebrate a life well lived. We entrust him to the care of our creator. Pocivao u miru Bozjem.
