Zygmunt Kowalski, age 88, late of Munster, IN, formerly of Highland, IN and Calumet City, IL passed away November 11, 2015 in Hartsfield Village, Munster, Indiana with his family by his side.\tSurvived by his six children, Anna (Michael) Tometczak of Green Valley, AZ, Christina (Joseph) Hajducko of Simpsonville, SC, Zygmunt John (Brenda) Kowalski of Owasso, OK, Donna (Thomas) Gosciej of Munster, IN, Barbara (John) Vetrano of Munster, IN, Thomas (Kelly) Kowalski of Naperville, IL; ten grandchildren: Elizabeth Tometczak, Laura Tometczak, Michael (Sherri) Tometczak Jr., Rachel Gosciej, Clarissa Gosciej, Brittany (Timothy Craig) O’Neal (nee Kowalski), Melissa Vetrano, Anthony Vetrano, Jaclyn Kowalski and Nicole Kowalski. Great-grandson Zacery Tometczak. Two step-grandchildren, Bridgette (Jones) Smith and Bethany (Dan) Bodine and several step-great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Shirley (Terry) Edwards, Sandra Duda, Karen (Isodoro) Salazar, Stanley (Susana) Kowalski. Many nieces, nephews and extended family in both Poland and the United States. He was proceeded in death by his wife Ruth Agnes Kowalski, his parents Anna Bocian and Antoni Kowalski of Poland, his siblings: Wladyslawa Kowalski, Bronislaw Kowalski, Maryana Kowalski, Antoni Kowalski, Czeslawa Kowalski, Helena Kowalski, Jan Kowalski (died as infant) all of Poland. His in-laws Mary Kowalski (Rolek) and Stanley Kowalski. Sister-in-law Dorothy Bobkowski, Brothers-in-law Donald Bobkowski and Jeffrey Duda.\t\t \tFuneral service will be held Tuesday, November 17, 2015. Prayers at 9:15am from the Kish Funeral Home to St. James the Less Catholic Church, 45th Ave/Kennedy Ave. Highland, IN. Mass at 10:00 am. Interment, Holy Cross Cemetery. Visitation on Monday, November 16, 2015 from 2pm – 8pm Zygmunt was born on January 6, 1927 in Gozdov, Poland. He went to school until the war started. After the war, he joined the Polish Army. Zygmunt later came to the United States. He sailed from Breman, Germany aboard the “US General S.D. Sturgis”. He later met his spouse of 58 years, Ruth Agnes Kowalski while at a dance. After a short courtship, they wed 9 months later on July 24, 1954. Ruth was the true love of his life. They were married 58 years. Zygmunt was a Machinist at Stan-Ray (Abex) and Kay Manufacturing. Ziggy and Ruth dedicated their lives to raising their six children and enjoying their many grandchildren. As his children were growing, Ziggy assisted their myriad of activities including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, music and sports. Lovingly known as Dziadzia to his own grandchildren, as well as others; each grandchild had a special place and relationship with their grandfather. During his retirement, he and Ruth enjoyed Polka dancing and traveling to see their wide-spread family throughout the United States and Poland. He was a lecturer at St. Andrew the Apostle Church in Calumet City. He was a parishioner at St. James the Less Catholic Church, member of the Polish-American Veterans-Post 40 in Hammond Indiana, American Polka Association, Golden Times and St. Andrew Church Sunshine Club in Calumet City, IL. There was never a day that he didn’t have a smile on his face. Ziggy will be missed by all who knew him.
